What's the project for?
The aim of this research is to pilot the effectiveness of a web-based intervention called TOPP (Tailored Obesity Prevention Program) in improving nutritional literacy, dietary intake and physical activity behaviours of adults, aged 18 – 35 years who live in the Perth, Western Australia .
What does the project involve?
If you choose to participate in this very important research you will be asked to complete online questionnaires which will ask questions about your demographics, food intake, physical activity and nutritional knowledge. The questionnaires are to be completed at the start of the program, and again in 10 weeks time.
Once you have completed the questionnaires, you will be randomly allocated to one of three groups: a control group; a comparison group or an intervention group. Participants in the control group will only be asked to complete the online questionnaires at the beginning and end of the TOPP program. Participants in the comparison group will be provided with reputable nutritional and physical activity information to be accessed via hyperlinks though TOPP. Participants in the intervention group will be given access to an interactive program which will provide tailored nutrition and physical activity information. Our aim is to compare which group is more effective in helping young adults change their eating and exercise habits.
All participants will receive emails and mobile phones text message reminders to access TOPP. Participants in the intervention group will also be provided with motivational messages via email and SMS.
Is it time consuming and difficult?
The questionnaires take about 15 – 20 minutes to complete, so they are quick and easy. By completing these questionnaires you will be providing us with valuable information that we need for our research. The questionnaires are available online, which means that you can complete them with a click of a few buttons. If you have been randomised to the comparison or intervention group then the amount spent with the program is completely up to you.
Participation is voluntary and anonymous
Participation in completing the questionnaires is voluntary and you will not be forced to give your opinions. All persons involved will remain completely anonymous and no names will be used in any publications of the findings. The results from this study will be reported in a written research report, however information about the project will not be made public in any way that identifies individual participants.
Can I withdraw from the study?
Participation is completely voluntary. It may be discontinued at any time for any reason without explanation. All data will be kept strictly confidential, such that only research staff will have access to the information.
Possible risks, inconvenience and discomforts?
There are no substantial risks with this study. However you must be prepared to complete the questionnaires and engage in TOPP program
